The Macedonian electricity market expands with the support of the Slovenian exchange- Intraday Market begins

The Ministry of energy, mining and mineral resources welcomes and institutionally supports today’s realization of the Agreement between the National Electricity Market Operator-MEMO DOOEL Skopje and the Slovenian energy exchange BSP, marking the official start of the implementation of the Intraday market.

„The establishment of the Intraday market is an essential step for the modernization of the Macedonian energy sector and its real integration into the European market. With such concrete projects, we build stability, transparency and competitiveness of the market, and the state clearly demonstrates that it knows where it is going and why “, the minister of energy, mining and mineral resources, Sanja Bozhinovska stated.

The agreement was signed in the presence of minister Bozhinovska at the МЕМО premises, by the MEMO’s manager, Zoran Gjorgjievski and the BSP’s executive director and the chairman of the Management board of the ADEX group, Anzhe Predovnik.

The Agreement represents continuity of cooperation with BSP and EPEX SPOT, an important step in the development of the Macedonian electricity exchange and in strengthening its technical and institutional readiness for market integration with the European Union.

With the Agreement, trading and clearing platforms for electricity markets are provided– Day-Ahead and Intraday. The Day-Ahead Market in North Macedonia has been successfully operating since May 2023, and the establishment of the Intraday Market represents a logical continuation of the process of market completion and European integration.

Minister Bozhinovska emphasized that the Ministry actively and continuously supports the institutional and technical preparedness of market operators:

„Our goal is clear-a functional, reliable and European-aligned electricity market. The Intraday Market brings greater flexibility, better management of renewable sources, and a reduction of systematic risks. This is a direct benefit both for market participants and for the energy stability of the country “, Bozhinovska highlighted.

After the signing of the Agreement, a kick-off meeting was held with BSP representatives, officially launching the activities for establishing the Intraday market, whose full implementation is planned by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

MEMO’s manager, Zoran Gjorgjievski assessed that the Agreement represents a significant step in strengthening the organized market and its preparation for future connection with the unified European market, while Anzhe Predovnik stressed the importance of the partnership and the institutional support from the Ministry as a key factor for successful project implementation.

With this activity, the Ministry of energy, mining and mineral resources once again confirms its strategic commitment to the development of a functional electricity market, deepening regional cooperation and full integration in the European energy market area.
