Bozhinovska at the Energy community: North Macedonia accelerates the integration into the European energy market

The minister of energy, mining and mineral resources, Sanja Bozhinovska addressed at the meeting of the Energy Community, whereas she presented the real and measurable dynamics of the progress of North Macedonia in aligning with the European energy and climate legislation and in strengthening regional energy integration.

In her speech, the minister highlighted that the last year was marked with challenges, but also with concrete institutional results, particularly in legislative reforms and strategic infrastructure steps.

As a key milestone, Bozhinovska emphasized the adoption of the new Energy law, which largely transposes the Package for integration of electricity. The law creates clear legal basis for the active integration of the national energy and gas system in the regional and the internal market of the European union and represents the most significant step toward the future coupling of the Macedonian energy market with the European energy market.

„With this law, the roles, obligations and responsibilities of the institutions, operators of the transmission systems and the market operators-not only in implementation are being redefined, but also the active participation in creating common rules for regional energy markets “, was highlighted in the speech.

Additionally, the minister informed that in 2025 the Law on Amending and Supplementing the Law on energy efficiency was adopted, which removes the regulatory and non-regulatory barriers for realization of projects on energy efficiency, strengthens cooperation among all stakeholders, encourages the use of renewable energy sources by end-users, and enables more efficient use of financial mechanisms and incentives.

In terms of strategic planning, Bozhinovska informed that the Revised National energy and climate plan (NECP) for the period 2025-2030 is at the final stage of adoption. The public consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including the Energy community has been completed, and the adoption in the shortest possible time.

Special emphasis was placed on MEPSO’s accession to the Joint Allocation Office (JOA) -the common European platform for auctioning cross-border transmission capacities, representing a strategic step forward for the national energy system and the practical integration into the largest and most transparent European platform of this kind.

In this regard, the minister announced that MEPSO intends to nominate one transmission infrastructure project within the process for selecting Projects of Energy Community Interest/Projects of mutual interest (PECI/PMI) in the 2026 cycle, as part of the efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and align with the European planning frameworks.

At the end, minister Bozhinovska underlined that the country is simultaneously working on critical investments in the regional energy and gas interconnections, aimed at increasing energy security, including the gas interconnector project with Greece and continuing discussions with Serbia.
