Bozhinovska at Bogdanci Wind Park: New Turbines, More Power, Less Pollution – North Macedonia Closer to Energy Independence

The Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, Sanja Bozhinovska, visited the Bogdanci Wind Park (BWP), the first such facility in the Republic of North Macedonia that uses wind as a driving force for electricity generation. Accompanied by officials from AD ESM, Mr. Ivan Stojanovski, Finance Director, and Mr. Goce Dzhambazovski, Assistant Director for Renewable Energy, the Minister was briefed on the current operations and future plans of this significant energy capacity.

The Minister was introduced to the park's infrastructure, including the control room, server hall, and the substation, which is essential for the operation of the entire complex. She also visited one of the turbines, where she had the opportunity to see the impact of the project under real-world conditions. The installed capacity of each turbine is 2.3 MW, the tower height is 80 meters, and the rotor diameter is 93 meters.

"Wind parks are not only economically viable but also environmentally responsible. They are key to a sustainable future and economic growth that does not jeopardize the resources of future generations," emphasized Minister Bozhinovska.

During the tour, Dzhambazovski pointed out that BWP Bogdanci is not only an example of a successful investment in renewable energy but also a significant contribution to the national electric power system.

“The turbines are manufactured by Siemens – Denmark and are among the best in their class. The park, with its 16 turbines, has an installed capacity of 36.8 MW and produces about 100 GWh of naturally sustainable energy annually, which is enough to supply around 60,000 citizens, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to CO2 emission reductions,” said Dzhambazovski.

Minister Bozhinovska was informed about the plans for the second phase of the project, BWP Bogdanci 2, which will add an additional 13.2 to 15 MW of capacity. This phase is part of the broader government strategy to increase the share of renewable energy sources to 45% of total production by 2030.

This phase will include the installation of four additional wind turbines, each with an installed capacity of 3.4 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to around 50 MW and providing an additional 37 GWh of annual production.

Minister Bozhinovska emphasized the importance of such projects for the country’s energy independence and sustainable development:

“Wind parks not only contribute to environmental protection but also ensure a stable and sustainable electricity supply for our citizens. The Bogdanci Wind Park remains a symbol of our country's energy future, demonstrating that with proper investments and a commitment to sustainable solutions, we can ensure a better and cleaner future for all.”

Wind parks like the one in Bogdanci are key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. They provide clean energy, reduce dependence on energy imports, and create new jobs. Beyond economic benefits, wind parks contribute to energy independence and stability, which is particularly important for countries like North Macedonia.

With the construction of the second phase, BWP Bogdanci will become an even more significant player in North Macedonia's energy market, contributing to economic growth and the green transition. This is a clear signal that North Macedonia is committed to sustainable economic solutions that balance economic, social, and environmental interests.

1. Current status of BWP Bogdanci:

  • Number of turbines: 16

  • Installed capacity: 36.8 MW (16 x 2.3 MW)

  • Annual production: around 100 GWh

  • Electricity supply: enough for around 60,000 citizens

2. Planned second phase BWP Bogdanci 2:

  • Number of additional turbines: 4

  • Additional installed capacity: 13.2 to 15 MW (each with 3.4 MW)

  • Annual production: an additional 37 GWh

Sincerely,
Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources
