Bozinovska: Transparency is not a choice-but an obligation; State energy companies hold joint briefing on the situation in the sector

The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources held a media briefing on the current situation in the energy sector, at which the minister of energy, Sanja Bozinovska and the directors of the three key state-owned energy companies – Lazo Uzunchev (AD ESM), Dr. Burim Latifi (MEPSO) and Zoran Gjorgievski (MEMO) gave presentations. This joint appearance was organized in order to enable a continuous open, direct and timely response to all questions of public interest related to the functioning of the energy system.

The focus of the briefing was the financial situation of state-owned companies, the stability of the electricity grid, current challenges, and the steps that institutions are taking for long-term security of supply.

The General Director of AD ESM, Lazo Uzunchev, emphasized that the company operates in a complicated financial context, with outstanding liabilities and pressure from increased costs for maintaining old capacities, as well as ambitious plans for transition to renewable sources. At the same time, it was emphasized that measures are being taken to rationalize costs, increase production efficiency and improve technical and technological processes in electricity production capacities. The state of hydrological reserves has significantly improved in the period April-May. Solid quantities of water have been accepted, which has had a positive impact on the reserves for electricity production exceeding 48 percent of the total available volume of the reservoirs. This favorable trend, which continues in the coming period, is key to ensuring stability in electricity supply. According to Uzunchev, AD ESM's primary goal is to enter the next heating season with at least 300,000 MWh of hydro potential. This will ensure a secure and continuous supply of electricity from domestic sources, the ability to quickly activate additional capacities during periods of increased demand, and ensure the necessary flexibility and security of the power system.

The director od MEPSO”, Dr. Burim Latifi, provided information on the current state of the transmission network. He pointed out that part of the network is technologically outdated and operates under high voltage pressure, which is why MEPSO” is in the process of modernizing key transformer stations and strengthening critical sections of the network.

The Manager of MEMO, Zoran Gjorgievski, presented data on the movements of the organized electricity market and the functionality of market mechanisms, especially in the context of public institutions purchasing electricity through the domestic stock market. In addition, Gjorgievski spoke about the importance of the issued Guarantees of Origin of electricity, market coupling, and the establishment of the intraday market.

Minister Bozinovska emphasized the importance of direct communication with the public and said that such joint appearances will become a regular practice. “This is part of our commitment – for institutions to be open, accountable and present when there are questions and dilemmas. Transparency is not a choice, but an obligation”, the minister said.

The Ministry of Energy and energy companies remain committed to regularly informing the public and creating an environment of trust, through such direct meetings and clear communication on all issues of importance to citizens and the economy.
