Bozinovska: With the construction of the gas interconnector with Greece, Macedonia gains regional influence – strong, connected and ready for tomorrow

The symbolic signing of the first gas pipelines near Negotino marked the beginning of the realization of the biggest energy investment in the last decade – a project that is changing the energy picture of the country. The construction of the gas interconnector with Greece has begun. The interconnector will provide access to new sources of natural gas, stable supply and realistic conditions for lower prices for households and industry. Through this connection with Greece, Macedonia is finally establishing true energy diversification and emerging from long-lasting infrastructure isolation.

“ Macedonia is becoming a key player in the regional energy network. We are not only strengthening our energy independence, but also contributing to the stability of the entire region. Every meter of this route is a symbol of vision, responsibility and energy maturity. Macedonia is not waiting for us – Macedonia is building. For a growing economy, for clean air, for a country that finally knows where it is going”, minister Sanja Bozinovska stated at today’s event.

The project, with a total value of around 83 million EUR will be completed in 22 months. The pipeline is also designed for the future transport of green hydrogen and is technologically compliant with European standards.

The project, worth over 83 million EUR, is supported by the European Union, the EIB and the EBRD. The construction is being undertaken by the domestic company "Rapid Bild" from Kumanovo, which further strengthens the role of the Macedonian economy in the realization of capital investments.

"We are proud that a macedonian company, with macedonian capacities and macedonian workers is taking over this responsibility. This is not just an energy project - this is an investment in our economy, in our people, in our families. Every denar invested here, returns to the macedonian economy - it creates jobs, supports local businesses and strengthens our economic sovereignty", the minister said.

"With this project, we are sending a clear message - Macedonia is no longer a hostage to infrastructural isolation. We are not waiting, but acting", Bozinovska emphasized. In addition to the interconnector with Greece, the Ministry is already working on the following key connections with Serbia, Kosovo... which will complete the regional gas network and will position Macedonia as a transit and supply point in the Balkans.

“We are finalizing the technical documentation for the interconnector with Serbia, we are also working intensively on the connection with Kosovo and the gas pipeline is on the verge of realization. These are new doors to a stable, safe and modern energy network”, мinister Bozinovska added.

The project also brings significant environmental benefits - natural gas as a cleaner energy source will enable a gradual reduction in pollution, especially in municipalities where fuel and wood are being used for heating.

The Minister concluded with a strong message:

“I am proud that we managed to realize the project that has been stalled for years. Today we are putting Macedonia on the map as a regional leader - strong, connected and ready for tomorrow”.
