The minister of energy, mining and mineral resources, Sanja Bozhinovska, participated in UNECE Resource Management Week 2026, where she delivered an address at this high level event, whereas high-level representatives, experts, and policymakers from around the world participated.
In her address, Bozhinovska conveyed a strong message that sustainable resource management is not a choice, but an imperative in a time of global energy and climate challenges.
“We are in a period of profound and irreversible transformation of the energy and resource system. Challenges such as climate change, energy security, and economic resilience are interconnected, but the opportunities arising from them can become drivers of sustainable development—if we act together”, minister emphasized.
She underlined that North Macedonia has made a significant institutional step forward in recent years with the establishment of the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, as a key step toward strengthening strategic governance of energy and natural resources.
“This was not an administrative, but a strategic decision, placing energy at the very heart of national policy”, Bozhinovska stressed.
The minister pointed out that concrete results are already being delivered through the development of key infrastructure projects, such as the gas interconnection with Greece and the planned interconnector with Serbia, which strengthen energy security and regional integration.
In parallel, the country is intensifying efforts to increase investments in renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind capacities, as well as to improve energy efficiency. In the mining sector, the focus is on responsible and sustainable resource utilization, in line with international standards.
In her address, Bozhinovska also highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation, noting that no country can overcome the challenges of the energy transition on its own.
“International cooperation is not an option—it is a necessity. Only through partnerships, knowledge exchange, and joint policies can we ensure a sustainable and secure future”, she said.
As confirmation of the country’s active role on the international stage, the minister recalled that North Macedonia hosted the 14th International Forum on Energy and Sustainable Development in Skopje, further strengthening its position as a credible partner and a regional hub for dialogue.
In conclusion, Bozhinovska issued a call for stronger cooperation and faster action:
“We have the knowledge, we have the tools, and we have the opportunity—but what is needed is determination and unity. Sustainability is not a final destination, but a process that requires vision, consistency, and partnership”.
Through its participation in this important international event, North Macedonia once again reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development, energy security, and an active role in global efforts to address climate and energy challenges.
