Bozhinovska at the COP29 Ministerial Meeting – North Macedonia Supports Initiatives for Green Energy Corridors and Energy Storage

The Minister of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources, Mrs. Sanja Bozhinovska, participated in the Ministerial Meeting within the framework of the COP29 Climate Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, where she confirmed North Macedonia's active participation and support for two key initiatives: the COP29 Green Energy Pledge: Green Energy Zones and Corridors, and the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge.

The Ministerial Meeting on energy initiatives at COP29 is one of the key events on the Energy Day of the Climate Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. This meeting, organized by the COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan in cooperation with UNIDO, the Economic Commission for Europe of the UN (UNECE), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and other important international partners, aims to launch important global energy initiatives: Green Energy Corridors and Zones, the Global Energy Storage Initiative, and Electric Grids.

The event was attended by senior representatives from the governments of participating countries, including Minister Sanja Bozhinovska, as well as representatives from the private sector, international financial institutions, and key donors and philanthropic organizations. The meeting serves as an opportunity for global mobilization of support and finances for innovations in the energy sector, with an emphasis on climate-resilient energy systems and the integration of global energy markets.

These initiatives are vital for regional energy transformation, and North Macedonia is committed to their implementation.

As part of the Green Energy Pledge initiative, countries will cooperate to create green energy corridors and zones. These corridors will integrate renewable sources into national and regional power grids, promoting energy stability, sustainable economic growth, and new job opportunities, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. North Macedonia, through its Energy Strategy until 2040 and the National Energy and Climate Plan, is already working on increasing renewable energy capacity, as well as creating infrastructure for green zones and industrial parks using renewable energy.

At the same time, with support for the Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge initiative, countries are committing to invest in new energy storage capacities and modernize the power grid, aiming to achieve a global capacity of 1,500 GW for energy storage by 2030. This will enable secure and stable energy supply and more efficient integration of renewable sources into power grids.

This support for COP29 initiatives demonstrates North Macedonia's commitment to achieving common goals for a sustainable energy transition, contributing to the fight against climate change and strengthening energy security in the region.
