Minister of energy, mining and mineral resources, Sanja Bozhinovska had an official meeting with Lesley Miller, UNICEF representative in North Macedonia.
The possibilities for enhancing intersectoral cooperation were reviewed at the meeting, aimed at creating policies that directly contribute for improvement of well-being of children and young people, especially in the context of the energy transition, climate challenges and reducing energy poverty.
Minister Bozhinovska emphasized that the Ministry is committed to developing inclusive and sustainable policies, putting an emphasis on vulnerable categories of citizens, including children, as well as ensuring access to safe, affordable and clean energy for all households.
„Energy policies are not only economic issue-they have a direct impact on the quality of life, health and the future of the children. Therefore, our commitment is to build a system that will be fair and sustainable for all generations“, Bozhinovska pointed out.
UNICEF representative, Miller, greeted the dedication of the institutions towards building policies based on children’s rights and emphasized the importance of integrating child’s perspective in all public policies, including sectors that are not traditionally associated with child protection, such as energy.
It was discussed at the meeting also for the potential joint initiatives in the areas of education, raising public awareness and including young people in policymaking processes, as well as support for programs that contribute to a sustainable and green future. UNICEF representatives presented their activities in the field of vocational education and training, including teacher mentorship and the implementation of training for high school students. In this regard, the importance of joint activities aimed at raising awareness among young people about topics such as clean air, energy efficiency and sustainable practices was highlighted.
Additionally, the possibility of including UNICEF in the Ministry’s existing activities was discussed, particularly in the area of practical training and student engagement.
Both parties expressed readiness for expanding cooperation in the future period, with a shared goal–to create better conditions for development, equal opportunities and safer future for every child.
