The process for the protection of the Macedonian ruby – a national treasure unique in Europe – has begun

Today, at the initiative and commitment of the Minister of energy, mining and mineral resources Sanja Bozinovska, a serious institutional process for the protection of the Macedonian ruby has begun – a geological unique stone that is found only in Prilep and Mariovo and is the only ruby in Europe that is naturally mined and processed.

At the meeting between the Ministry of energy, mining and mineral resources, the Geological Survey and the State office of industrial property, concrete steps were defined to ensure the official status of the Macedonian ruby as a protected national mineral heritage. The Geological Survey introduced the present at the meeting to the prepared analysis for legal protection, which will be supplemented in accordance with new data, and the need for broader institutional coordination was additionally emphasized.

The long-time promoter of the Macedonian ruby, Deko was also at the meeting, presenting the history and significance of each specimen made with this exceptional stone.

Minister Sanja Bozinovska said:

“The Macedonian ruby, unique in its origin and properties, deserves institutional protection and recognition as a national treasure. This is just the beginning of a larger process of protection, appreciation and international promotion of the Macedonian mineral wealth – as part of the national identity and our natural pride.”

The ruby mined in Macedonia is geologically and aesthetically unique: it is known as corundum with a characteristic raspberry-pink color, which occurs due to the presence of chromium in its crystal structure. It is found exclusively in the vicinity of Prilep and in the Mariovo mountains, making it the only natural ruby in mainland Europe that is processed locally. In addition to its aesthetic and collector’s value, it is part of the country’s cultural and historical heritage – a symbol of natural beauty and national pride.
