At the initiative of the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, and with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the 14th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development will be held in our country in 2025.
The initiative came from the Minister of Energy, Ms. Sanja Bozhinovska, who addressed UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe). This is a great honor, but also a responsibility for the country—especially for the Ministry of Energy. By organizing such a significant forum, North Macedonia will position itself as a regional leader in the green transition, showcasing its commitment to international cooperation and sustainable energy development.
The decision was made following the conclusion of the 13th Forum, held in early December in Bangkok, Thailand, organized by the five UN regional commissions (ECA, ECE, ECLAC, ESCAP, and ESCWA). This year’s theme was “Just Energy Transition.”
The Forum will bring together energy sector experts, government representatives, UN entities, international organizations, the business community, and other stakeholders to discuss key issues and present actions for a just energy transition.
The energy transition, in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, is the key transformation needed to achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goals. Given that the energy sector is responsible for more than two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions, a sustainable energy transition is crucial for meeting the Paris Agreement targets. Joint efforts from all stakeholder levels are needed to accelerate the energy transition and meet these critical goals. The recommendations from the COP29 Climate Change Conference held in Baku will also serve as a foundation for the next forum.
The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources will organize the event in cooperation with UNDP and in coordination with the relevant regional UN agencies.
