The Minister of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources, Mrs. Sanja Bozhinovska, held a productive meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of the Republic of Albania, Mrs. Belinda Balluku. The discussions focused on deepening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, with special emphasis on the progress of the interconnector project between North Macedonia and Albania, which will enable energy connectivity between the two countries.

The interconnector project, supported by the European Union and other international institutions, aims to provide energy stability and increased flexibility in the supply of natural gas across the region. The plan envisions the interconnector as part of a wider regional energy network that will link our region, allowing for greater energy independence and competitiveness.

Both parties emphasized the significance of this interconnector as key infrastructure for energy connectivity in the region, connecting the energy systems of North Macedonia, Albania, and Greece. This project will enhance supply and diversification of energy resources, increase energy stability and efficiency, and reduce dependence on energy imports.

Minister Bozhinovska emphasized the great importance of this connection for North Macedonia. “With the realization of this interconnector, North Macedonia will gain direct access to the gas pipeline networks in Albania and Greece, providing us with security and diversity in energy supply. This is vital not only for the energy sector but also for the overall economy of the country,” said Minister Bozhinovska.

The discussion also addressed the connection of energy markets, which is part of the broader vision for regional cooperation. The aim of market integration is to facilitate energy trade, optimize resource use, and ensure greater transparency and competitiveness in the energy sector. By creating a larger common market, greater flexibility will be enabled—essential for adaptation to renewable energy sources and the reduction of fossil fuels.

Minister Balluku reiterated Albania's commitment to supporting regional initiatives that facilitate energy transit and strengthen cooperation in the Balkans. During the meeting, both ministers agreed on next steps and planned an additional bilateral meeting to accelerate the implementation of projects of interest to both countries and the region.

With this meeting, both countries demonstrate readiness for joint progress toward an integrated and energy-independent region—a significant step toward fulfilling European goals for sustainable energy and a climate-neutral continent.
