The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources today signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with four primary schools from Skopje and with Makedonski Telekom, thus starting the implementation of an initiative for more efficient use of electricity and for promoting energy awareness in the education system.
“Energy efficiency must start from the ground up – from our schools, where we educate both future citizens and future professionals. Through such concrete steps, we convey the message that every institution and every individual, has a role in sustainable energy management. At the same time, with such projects we teach young generations about awareness, responsibility and rational use of energy – values that are essential for the future we are building together”, мinister Sanja Bozinovska said.
This is the first step in introducing smart monitoring and management of electricity consumption in public institutions, starting with the primary schools "Mirce Acev" (Gjorce Petrov), "Ismail Qemali" (Cair), "Kiril Pejcinovic" (Kisela Voda) and "Lazo Angelovski" (Aerodrom). A donation from Makedonski Telekom - an advanced solution for smart metering and management of electricity (Smart Energy Metering and Management - SEMM) will be installed in these schools. The solution will allow these schools to have better insight and control over energy costs and will encourage more responsible use of resources.
The schools welcomed the partnership with the ministry and emphasized the importance of such projects for their daily functioning.
“This is not just a technical solution, but a tool that helps us as institutions to be more efficient, more responsible and to include energy awareness in the educational process”, the directors of the four schools said in a joint statement.
The SEMM solution is fully developed by Makedonski Telekom. The system allows schools to monitor in real time how and how much they spend, which will make it easier to identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary consumption and improve energy efficiency.
“I am particularly pleased to be part of this energy efficiency project, by donating our smart solution to four schools in Skopje. In the era of connected technologies, our goal is not only to contribute to digitalization, but also to a healthier environment, in this case by reducing electricity consumption. Cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources and schools is very important, because only through such partnerships long-term and thorough solutions are created”, Nikola Ljušev, CEO of Makedonski Telekom said.
“We hope that more and more companies will follow this example and will get involved in solutions that will help these institutions deal with electricity consumption and costs more easily and efficiently”, Bozinovska emphasized.
"Companies should not only be technologically innovative – we also expect real social responsibility from them. Today, when we are all facing energy challenges, it is especially important for the private sector to invest and help where it is most needed – in public institutions such as schools and hospitals", Bozinovska concluded.
