The Minister of energy, mining and mineral resources, Sanja Bozhinovska, held a working meeting with the president of the Macedonian mining association (MAR), Dime Petroski. The importance of open dialogue and partnership between institutions and the mining sector, in order to establish trust and create a constructive atmosphere for future cooperation was emphasized at the meeting.
President Petroski pointed out that the mining profession has been under strong public pressure in recent years and emphasized that the goal of the Association is to show that this is an honest and responsible profession.
"Our goal is to show that this is an honest and responsible profession, which has always been the pride of the country. Today, it is carried out with respect for the laws and cooperation with the institutions", Petroski said. He added that “earning is important, but even more important are the reputation, good image and public perception of mining as an activity that equally cares for the environment”.
Minister Bozhinovska emphasized that the Ministry is committed to create better working conditions in the sector, but also to guarantee the protection of the public interest and natural resources.
“We understand that the mining sector requires better working conditions, but we are obliged to ensure fair rules, transparency and protection of resources. We will work on reducing administrative barriers and harmonizing with European standards”.
Regarding the future development of the sector, Petroski emphasized that it is important for mining to be treated as a driving force of economic development and the well-being of citizens. This country has given us a lot and we must use this responsibly.
Minister Bozhinovska emphasized that support will be given precisely to those companies that invest in environmentally friendly technologies and invest in local communities.
"Our goal is to build fair and transparent regulations that will guarantee both economic development and environmental protection. In the new legal solutions and strategies for mining and geology, the priority is to establish the strictest environmental standards in the exploration, exploitation and processing of mineral resources, strengthening of the obligations for reclamation, support local communities and ensure greater control and transparency in the sector. Human capital development is also important. Cooperation with the universities and vocational schools is particularly important in order to build new generations of qualified personnel for the mining sector".
The need for new investments and modernization by introducing modern technologies for cleaner and more efficient production was also emphasized at the meeting. "The modern way of life brings an increased need for minerals and resources, which makes modernization and responsible mining necessary", Petroski added.
Both sides agreed that investing in local communities and transparent operations are key to strengthening trust between the public and mining companies. Defining joint activities and dynamics of cooperation, including the establishment of thematic working groups, organizing regular meetings and preparing a memorandum of cooperation were agreed as the next steps.
