AFD joins JETIP: Macedonia accelerates energy transition

AFD has joined the Investment platform for a just energy transition in North Macedonia to support a fair, secure and affordable energy transition in the country.

On October 15th in Skopje, the Ministry of energy, mining and mineral resources of North Macedonia signed a Joint Declaration with the French Development Agency (AFD), officially welcoming AFD as a partner of the Investment Platform and strengthening support for North Macedonia’s just energy transition.

Speaking at the ceremony, minister Bozhinovska stated: "We are pleased to welcome AFD to the Investment platform for a just energy transition. This partnership strengthens our ability to modernize the energy system, integrate more renewable sources and to safeguard the availability and security of supply. The support from AFD—together with the expertise shared by European experts—helps us ensure continuous and broad commitment to North Macedonia’s energy transition, while placing citizens and businesses at its center."

Deputy director of AFD’s Office for the Western Balkans, Mr. François Vince, added: "AFD is committed to supporting North Macedonia’s just and sustainable energy transition. Through the Investment Platform, we will cooperate with the Government and other platform partners to realize plans through concrete, financially viable, and implementable projects that bring real benefits to households, industry, and society at large."

This partnership illustrates AFD’s ambition to support North Macedonia in its efforts toward EU membership. Working side by side with national authorities, European institutions, and other development partners, AFD contributes to strengthening the country’s capacity to implement reforms, modernize key sectors, and align with EU standards.

About the Investment Platform for a Just Energy Transition and the Technical Support Unit

The Investment Platform for a Just Energy Transition is a government coordination mechanism that links priority energy investments (renewables, transmission networks, energy storage, and system flexibility) with just transition measures (workforce retraining, support for small and medium enterprises, and community involvement in coal-dependent regions).

Processes within the Investment Platform are supported by the Technical Support Unit, established by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Skopje with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The Unit’s goal is to enable coordination and communication with all stakeholders, led by the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources and the partners of the Investment Platform.
